MUMBAI–Women in this bustling city who are fed up with riding in grubby cabs and being ogled by their male drivers now have an alternative–a new taxi service run by women exclusively for women.
The company is named “Forsche,” a combination of “female” and the German luxury car manufacturer Porsche.
The firm puts extra emphasis on the cleanliness of its cabs in a country not known for hygiene on public transport. There are also mirrors fitted into the backs of seats, make-up kits and women’s magazines.
The drivers all wear traditional women’s salwar kameez, a long tunic over trousers, in pink or purple.
Although the service is for women, boys aged 12 and younger are also allowed to ride.
Company founder Revathi Roy, 47, operated a small factory manufacturing cotton-clothes. She came up with the idea for the service at the beginning of this year, she said.
In Mumbai, regular yellow and black cabs can be uncomfortable for female customers. Male drivers often spit from car windows or leer at the women in their rear-view mirrors.
