Perhaps this is most clear when you look at the movie from Al Gore. Everything he says is technically true. He says for instance that if Greenland melts, sea levels will rise about 20 feet. This is technically true. But of course the very evocative imagery of seeing Holland disappear under the waves - or New York, or Shanghai - leaves the impression that this is all going to happen very soon. Where in fact the UN climate panel says that the sea level rise over the next 100 years is going to be 30 cm - about 20 times less than he talks about. So there is a dramatic difference between what we’re being told and what we’re actually seeing. Which is also why I am writing a new book which comes out next fall on climate change, and I will address some of these issues.

Milton Friedman sempre foi contrário ao serviço militar obrigatório. Pouca gente sabe disto. Agora, veja isto:

BANGCOC - Um jovem transexual abriu um precedente jurídico na Tailândia ao solicitar a um tribunal a retirada da qualificação de retardado mental de seu certificado militar, tratamento dado pelo Exército aos homossexuais, considerados não aptos para o serviço militar.

Samart Meecharoen, de 22 anos, formado em Administração, apresentou a queixa alegando que sua qualificação como mentalmente doente é discriminatória e cria um sério obstáculo para um trabalho digno, informou a imprensa local.

Ok, notícia interessante, certo? Agora veja só isto:

O Ministério da Defesa admitiu que recebe cada vez mais queixas de grupos de defesa dos direitos humanos, que exigem o fim do serviço militar, obrigatório desde 1954.

Em outras palavras, os grupos não estão muito preocupados com o fato do sujeito ser administrador (piadinha…) ou transexual (o que é relativamente pouco complicado lá). Eles não querem é serviço militar obrigatório!

Se algo é ruim para você, você faz acordo? Voluntariamente, não. Bem, os governos do Japão e da Indonésia acabam de iniciar um FTA (Free Trade Agreement).

Vejamos:

Under the two countries’ FTA framework, which the two leaders signed in the evening, Indonesia will cut tariffs on about 90 percent of Japanese imports from the current level of roughly 30 percent, while Japan will lift tariffs on about 93 percent of Indonesian import levies, which are set at around 70 percent at present.

Higher oil revenues have enabled mismanagement and abuse of power in Venezuela, leading to record levels of corruption, argues a new policy analysis by the Cato Institute. In “Corruption, Mismanagement, and Abuse of Power in Hugo Chávez’s Venezuela,” author Gustavo Coronel details how the Chávez regime is squandering the country’s wealth through rampant official and personal corruption. Coronel concludes: “Meaningfully reducing corruption in Venezuela would require eliminating motives and opportunities for corruption and punishing those responsible. After eight years of Hugo Chávez, it’s entirely clear that the battle against corruption in Venezuela cannot begin until Chávez has gone.”

What Drives Media Slant? Evidence from U.S. Daily Newspapers

Abstract

We construct a new index of media slant that measures whether a news outlet’s language is more similar to a congressional Republican or Democrat. We apply the measure to study the market forces that determine political content in the news. We estimate a model of newspaper demand that incorporates slant explicitly, estimate the slant that would be chosen if newspapers independently maximized their own profits, and compare these ideal points with firms’ actual choices. Our analysis confirms an economically significant demand for news slanted toward one’s own political ideology. Firms respond strongly to consumer preferences, which account for roughly 20 percent of the variation in measured slant in our sample. By contrast, the identity of a newspaper’s owner explains far less of the variation in slant, and we find little evidence that media conglomerates homogenize news to minimize fixed costs in the production of content.

O Half Sigma faz uma análise interessante dos programas norte-americanos de redução de desigualdades.

There have actually been decades of reforms, going back to the 1954 Supreme Court decision of Brown v. Board of Education which ordered school desegration based on the conclusion that the racial performance gap was proof that black schools were not equal to white schools.

If there were no genetic IQ difference between the races, than the decades of failing to close this gap would be a huge national disgrace and something all Americans should be ashamed of. No wonder why leftists, who refuse to believe in racial IQ differences, hate America so much. I believe that leftists would be justified in hating America if the racial gap had nothing to do with genetic difference between the races.

However, there is a huge body of evidence, kept hidden by the left wing media, that (1) IQ is a genetically inherited trait; and (2) genes correlated with higher IQ occur with different frequencies in different races. (There’s no need to go into this here because most of my readers are already aware of this, but for those who aren’t I recommend The g Factor by Arthur Jensen. I can’t help but note that the book is sold at a ridiculously high price in order to ensure that no one reads it. Conspiracy?)

O problema que ele destaca é um que o pessoal da biologia, em algum momento, terá que encarar, além de ter que enfrentar o pessoal que faz leitura seletiva dos achados científicos. O importante, para mim, é que se os critérios são frágeis até à argumentação retórica de um Zé Ninguém (isto inclui celebridades das artes que adoram falar besteiras sobre economia, política, etc), então é bom parar antes de gastar o dinheiro das pessoas com as políticas.
